There’s something magnetic about a downtown session — the movement, the textures, the way a couple can literally blend into the energy of the city while still feeling like the only two people on the street. It’s part editorial, part documentary, part “we just stepped out of a movie scene,” and I swear every time I photograph couples in an urban setting, it unlocks some kind of creative superpower inside me.

This recent series was sparked by a simple concept:

What if we borrowed the mood of a downtown New York afternoon and brought it straight into Minneapolis?

Turns out… magic. Absolute magic.

If you’re dreaming of photos that feel refined, romantic, modern, and a little effortless, here’s everything you need to know — from outfits, to what shooting with me downtown actually looks like, to why stepping outside of your comfort zone (yes, both for couples and fellow photographers) is wildly worth it.

01 / Why Downtown Sessions Feel So Different

Because the city moves.

Cars pass, people wander, lights flicker in windows — and that energy makes everything feel more alive.

Downtown gives you:

  • Built-in backdrops — brick, glass, texture, architecture
  • Gorgeous natural frames — columns, alleyways, crosswalks, reflections
  • Movement — walking shots, street crossings, candid moments
  • A timeless vibe — like your own mini editorial for a magazine spread

And the best part?

You don’t have to “perform.” You simply exist together, and the city fills in the rest.

02 / What a Downtown Session With Me Looks Like

My approach is always collaborative, lighthearted, and grounded in the two of you. But downtown — that’s where we really lean into movement, mood, and intention.

Here’s the exact flow:

We start with a warm-up spot

Something simple: leaning against a building, interacting naturally, letting your shoulders drop.

These moments usually feel like quiet pockets of connection amid the bustle.

Then we wander

I let my eye guide us — chasing good light, interesting textures, quiet streets, or busy corners that feel cinematic.

We incorporate movement

Walking, crossing the street hand-in-hand, subtle spins, leaning into one another, brushing a hair away.

Nothing cheesy. Nothing performative.

Just the kind of gestures you already do — elevated.

And then we play

Downtown sessions always open the door for play — sunglasses moments, jackets wrapped around each other, leaning into lamp posts, grabbing coffee, people-watching together. The city gives you permission to loosen up.

The result? A gallery that feels warm, real, and a little editorial without ever feeling posed.

03 / What to Wear for a Downtown Engagement Session

Think: clean lines, layers, texture, movement.

You don’t need a statement piece — the city is your statement.

But you do want outfits that photograph well in an environment full of contrast and structure.

Here’s my go-to formula:

For Her

  • Long coat or trench (instant editorial energy)
  • Heeled boots or classic pumps
  • Tights for texture
  • A monochrome base outfit
  • Sunglasses for a few playful dusk-in-the-city shots
  • Structured bag
  • Delicate jewelry for interest without distraction

For Him

  • Dark denim or tailored trousers
  • Button-up layered under a jacket or overcoat
  • Leather boots or clean sneakers (depending on vibe)
  • Simple accessories: watch, scarf, understated rings

Color Palette Tips

Stick to neutrals or muted tones — blacks, creams, browns, charcoal, camel, burgundy — so the environment wraps around you instead of competing with you.

Bonus Tip: Layers are your best friend

They add shape and interest, plus they give us something to play with when we create movement shots.

04 / For Photographers: Shoot Somewhere That Scares You a Little

These photos were born from a moment of creative curiosity —

What would happen if I treated Minneapolis like SoHo or Tribeca?

And the truth is: unfamiliar places force you to see differently.

If you’re a photographer reading this, consider this your tiny, gentle push to:

  • Chase the concept, not the location
  • Let architecture inspire you
  • Work with unpredictable light
  • Embrace sidewalks, streets, reflections, and mixed textures
  • Let the couple guide the energy
  • Say yes to movement — even the messy kind

Sometimes the most inspiring work doesn’t come from hopping on a plane to a dream destination.

Sometimes it comes from stepping into your own city with new eyes.
